They usually come with a pretty good warranty as well. If you haven't done an engine before, maybe just getting a "longblock" (crankcase with heads only, you use your old valve covers, oil pan, etc. a "shortblock would be the crankcase only, no cylinder head..) would be a good way to go. This way, all the critical machine work will be done for you already. Pulling an engine, replacing the covers and other periphial components, and putting it back in is a job that can be completed by someone who has some mechanical ability and a reasonable set of tools....Once you see what size job it is, for the next round, you can start from scratch with a junkyard motor and do a little at a time and build the exact kind of engine you want.... Let us know which way you go.....Like Steve said, we'll help as much as we can... Good Luck! What do you guys think?? Dunno 'bout F350 springs, but I put a set of F250 "camper special" springs (7 leaves + 1 overload) under my '71 F100. (9" axle) I removed one leaf to make 6+1's and I've hauled 1800+lbs of firewood over 110 miles twice this year and the springs could easily have taken more. Sure made me wish for disk brakes tho... You can't miss it, the show is next to it and there's a bazillion trucks on front lawn in front of it. The meeting will be informal and I plan to be there from 9:50 until we decide to head out. Bring a lunch and drinks, we'll find a place where we can go as a group to eat. Per Garry Bowling's suggestion, I'm going to briefly address the group (I hate speaking in public!). Sunday, 8 am until ??? - Sunday breakfast - ---------------------------------------- Breakfast really won't get underway until 8:30 but there will be people there at 8am. Bring donuts, bagels, McDonalds or whatever, enough for you and may a couple extra to put on the table for the group. This will be at a pavillion at Patriots Park. We'll have directions at the Saturday get together and at our booth. Sorry that this is so early but many people are heading out early to get home at a reasonable hour. To get a nametag/badge to wear to identify yourself, go to: http://www.ford-trucks.com/badge.gif and simply print it out. When you register for the show, please list Ford Truck Enthusiasts as the group/club you're with. We want Pat Ford, the promoter, to know that we support his event so we can make our booth a yearly thing. If you need the truck now for a daily driver or something, I'd say go with a Jasper rebuild. I've never heard anything bad about their engines and a lot of good, plus they are warrantied. Ask around where you live for a good reputable shop, have them order and install it, and you'll probably be back on the road in a week or so and have someone to turn to for any problems that might develop. It would probably be cheaper to have your current engine rebuilt by a local shop, but again, you have to pick the right place. Ask around. Check with people in the auto parts stores, machine shops, automotive electric supply houses, anybody that handles auto problems. If there is a good rebuild shop around you'll probably here the same name from different folks. It's easier if you're from a small town area because everybody knows everybody else and a mechanic will get a reputation, either good or bad, that will be spread around. Finally, if you don't need the vehicle fast, you might consider doing it yourself. When it is finished there will a great deal of satisfaction plus you will know the vehicle intimately and will take a lot more pride in it. Rebuilding the engine itself will be reasonably cheap (you're not paying other folks labor) but if you haven't been into doing your own mechanicing before be warned, it will turn out more expensive totally because you will always be needing another tool of somekind. This stuff gets in your blood and before long you'll have every tool catalog in North America lying around your house. But having said that, their is GREAT satisfaction in doing it yourself. Don't worry too much about never having done this before. Study books and the people on this list are great for knowledge. You CAN do it if you want too. I hope that gives you a better idea of your options. Good luck and let everyone know how it's coming. Clifford isn't far from me. I think their in Pamona CA. I was thinking of calling them and ask if they have a price list or something. I don't have a 300 I6 but many list members do. If there is an interest, I'll see what I can do. >I would beg the group's opinions on having the engine rebuilt by a shop or >just purchasing an engine (Jasper or Marshall seem popular sources in >Cleveland, OH) and bolting on all the remaining items. Anyone have any opinions of pre-built engine suppliers? Is there a problem with the bottom end? When I tore into my '73 F100's 302 (a header installation that got out of hand :]) I was surprised to find how good it looked. I disassembled it, inspected parts, cleaned, painted (were applicable) replaced the freeze plugs, did some shade tree head work and reassembled it. If yours is that tired, do it yourself and you'll learn something. Even if you find yourself over your head, throw it back together and turn it in for a short block, send the head out to a local shop. Rebuilding the head will bring back the most life, plus it's the thing most likely to be burning oil. I would send the head out first and see how it runs. You may save some money for your cool parts! Yes and it is awesome.. I would like to add though that if you pick up the pieces from the 80 up model trucks for use on the older models there is a couple of wires which need to have their positions in the connector swapped with each other in order for the Windscreen washer pump to work. I can't remember the color or much detail right now but it is straightforward and easy to see which need to be swapped by looking at the two switch assemblies and connectors. I will however after Pigeon forge write up the exact process and add it to the existing page. Main reason... the 80'and up trucks are much easier to find with this option at the boneyards.. > >seem to remember that when the guy did the article he said it would work on > >'67-'72.
