Hey OX,

Hope I haven't led you astray....while re-reading my message, I meant that
they are $45 per unit ($90/axle).....Sounds like the aluminum ones are the way
to go. It seemed like mine were chromed or something...do they chrome both
kinds?

I'm a little puzzled when you say "no springs" in the external hubs. The
external units have all the power going through the 6 big cap screws into the
outside of bearing hub...rather than having the bearing hub itself splined on
the inside.

It's under the left field bleachers. Can't see the game but the view is
great! The lack of one that is. :) (The goodie goodies on the list won't
get that one right away). I will say, I'm not alone. There's a couple

1.
This is a faily common problem in older Ford trucks. The plate you are
referring to is called a rag joint. It is usuall a piece of
rubber/plastic ring that the steering collumn and input shaft to the
steering gear box bolt to. When the ring rotts away then the plate on
the steering column actuates the gear box via the pins captured in the
large cutouts. This is the fail safe mecanism to prevent 20/20 from
featuring articles about runaway Ford trucks (ala certian incenderiary
ch**s ;0) ). The rag joint is easily replaceable and relatively cheep
compared to the aggravation/safety hazard of a loose steering linkage.
I would definately go Ford orignial on this part. I don't think it is
availabel aftermarket. It can be replaced without completely removing
the column. When I did mine I just loosened it and slid it up away from
the steering gear box.

2.
I have heard of those parts failing and being replaced without a full
new column. I think it was the ring around the column that the shift
lever goes into that is replaced. I have not done it myself just going
on hearsay here.

3.
Go to a junkyard and score the parts you need there.

Keep it up. Sounds like you have the begining of a great project there!!

I purchased a 1966 F100 from a friend (it was his grandfathers), anyway
- - - It is a Custom Cab with Short Wheel Base and Short Bed. For the most
part it runs great, however there are a few problems I am working on.

1st - The Steering is a little loose, but it appears to be a connecting
plate between the steering colomn and the steering box - that is round,
and has 2 or 3 pegs that are worn. The plate that holds the pegs is
really worn as well. thus causing the loose steering - It this plate
replaceable or is it going to need a whole new steering column. -

2nd -The Selector on the steering colomn is also broken (the part you
grab to change the gear - automatic transmission) so I currently just
grip the column and change the gear - can this be replaced or do I need
a whole new steering colomn.

3rd - The complete emergency brake is missing along with cables and so
forth. Does anybody know where I can get this part? I need it to get the
truck inspected. - any idea on cost?

So far that is my current project for the truck - I am trying to keep
costs down and only repair the most important parts as of now.

Yes, I got it right:-). I ordered a set at 52$ ea locally.

I don't think it is, but I didn't get a choice. The alum one's (alum
pistons with cast body) that came with my dana 60 front are corroded to
crap. It looks like galvanic corrosion took place. I hope my new one's
are steel.

Possibly, but usually only anodize alum.

Maybe I don''t have external hubs then. My hubs have no springs. The
outer mechanism has a cam that pulls the locking part of hub either in or
out. Every other Ford locking hub I've seen has a spring to lock it and a
cam to unlock it. My outer cover does not transmit power, so I guess I
don't have external hubs. They sure are different than any other axle
I've seen. Way different than my spare dana 60 front I got for parts.

If you deside to adjust the steering box take
the column loose from under the dash (if the
truck has ever been bumped it will bind )
tighten the box untill you get 1/4 # of preload
at the steering wheel rim, tighten the nut and replace the collar on
the column.

I've got a '67 f100 95% restored to original. Saturday I'm taking it to a
car show. In preparation for the show, I was cleaning the engine compartment
and while reconnecting the negative cable to the battery, there was static
electricity. I noticed the cable running from the starter relay switch to the
alternator was smoking at the alternator terminal. I immediately
disconnected the contact on the negative battery terminal. I can't figure
out why this happened. I'm thinking my new starter relay switch went bad.
This would make the 3rd relay switch I've gone through in 3mos. Anyone have
any ideas?

Well they're very rare and very fast. Problem is they only seat 2 people
and they suck ALLOT of fuel, usually JP4 which is a little hard to come by
at the local Chevron. I believe you have to get a special license to drive
one and I've heard the final exam is a b*tch. Also F-111s tend to provoke
rather extreme reactions in certain 3rd world countries causing people to
fling large pointy objects which explode at you. The upside is you will
never be stuck in rush hour traffic in an F-111.

stock? If so, did you go aftermarket, or try to find and
graft a factory system?

Any recomendations for good aftermarket sources, and general

My '79 F-250 4x4 is a great truck; but it's black and has no

A/C, and I'm a wimp. Once the temp gets over 85F and the
humidity hits saturation, I'm dyin' - esp. in stop and go
traffic. Ugh.

also have the slipjoint type splines that are in driveshafts that are
"fixed" on both ends, and do all sorts of driveshaft remakes.

I added AC to my '78 F150. I went to the junk yard and grabbed all the AC
stuff from a '79 Ranger XLT (F100). Bought a new York compressor, clutch,
and had new hoses made. I grabbed the dash, ducts, and AC controls. I
won't go into too much detail on the list - it would be too long.

The wiring harness that was in my truck had provisions for the AC equipment
so I did not need the wiring harness from the donor truck. Ford was
thinking back then. Had to cut the hole in the firewall, modify the
radiator support (cutting and welding support brackets for the radiator and
condenser). No real major modifications had to be made other than the hole
in the firewall for the evaporator/blower box. It was a time consuming
task - taking an entire week from start to finish. Total cost was ~$325.
Did all the work myself with friends. Only thing I paid to have done was
the hoses. Used methanol to clean the condenser, evaporator, and the
hoses. (regular rubbing alcohol will work fine - just blow it out good
with compressed air). Drained the mineral oil from the new compressor and
put in the proper amount of POE oil (Polyol Ester). Did the vacuum checks
and put the system on a vacuum (29") for two hours and charged the system
with 3.5 cans of R134A. Works great. Ohh, I replaced the expansion valve
and thermostatic switch (included in the cost I quoted)

Wish I would have taken pictures - would have been a great addition to my
Ford Fan web site.

purchased window rattler kits from Melvins Classic Ford Parts. Dennis
Carpenter makes them. If Obsolete sells the same items made by Dennis
Carpenter then get them, they are very good.

I went back out to the junkyard and the owner gave me the steering wheel.
Turns out that there is a sleeve that slides over the neck on the under side
of the steering wheel that has a pin that activates the c*ncellers. I also
got a spring and bullet for the horn reluctor, but the insulator is shot, so
I'll probaly have to get a new one of those.

The slack in the column is history and with a little WD on the switch, the
signals work like a charm, c*ncellers and all. The horn will be next. I have....
