The rope seals were very durable but very difficult to replace and not too forgiving of worn bearings but were used by many manufactures back then. That is why I'm changing rear end gears so I can get the highway cruise rpm in the sweet spot range. I can get a 3.50 and 3.90:1 ring and pinion sets from my Uncle so I have a choice of the two. With the 3.50:1, I would be turning ~2100 at 70 Mph. Not turning fast enough - espcially if I'm fighting a head wind. With the 3.9oos I will turn ~2400 at 70. That leaves me with enough horespower to sustain speed through wind and road changes. Stock engines probably have cams in the 190-195 duration which produce a lot more torque. I used to have more torque, but I put on full length 1 1/2" primary headers and 2 1/4" dual exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbos. Back pressure has dropped and low end torque has suffered. I have an Edelbrock 600 CFM carb w/Edlebrock Performer intake and 9.6:1 CR. I run 93 octane at all times and a lot of mechanical advance. At idle I have it a 16 degrees, then by 1500 RPM I'm already at 25 degrees. Everything on my truck has been worked over. I'm running out of things to do to my truck.. Once I get the rear end gears in, all that is left is body work and a paint job. Engine is new, new OD tranny, and proper rear end gears. Suspension is great, interior is great (could be better). I now have air conditioning (truck was not factory equipped with AC). System uses R134a refigerant and it is a factory AC setup - no under dash thing. Now if I can just keep my amplifier from turning off and on by itself, I'll be a happy camper.
